Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton, has been charged with intent to
distribute cocaine and is currently locked up in a federal jail in
Miami.
Buju Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, has been in custody of Drug
Enforcement Administration since Thursday, 8th December. He has since
been transferred to Tampa, where the U.S. Attorney has charged the
reggae artist with the possession of over five kilos of cocaine with
the intention to supply and distribute. He faces 20 years in prison if
convicted.
Buju has been in the United States from September promoting his new
album ‘Rasta Got Soul’ which has been nominated for the Grammy of 'Best
Reggae Album'. There is speculation that Buju Banton’s Grammy
nomination may be taken away but that can be dismissed, as Banton’s
nomination is not under threat. His album promotion gained high praises in the USA but also stired up
heavy opposition from the groups Gay Men of
African Descent, National Black Justice Coalition, and the Gay &
Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
Banton's new album ‘Rasta Got Soul’ was nominated along with other
reggae artists Sean Paul, Gregory Isaacs, Stephen and Julian Marley.
The Grammy’s will air Jan. 31 on CBS.
